چکیده

So-called specific ion effects strongly impact physicochemical phenomena in among others, morphologies of polymeric membranes. This can be correlated to the identity ions, rather than just their charge or concentration. We use this effect tune properties layer-by-layer membranes prepared with polyelectrolytes polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride and polystyrene sodium sulfonate. To systematically study this, were using different salts (NaBr, NH4Cl, MgCl2, NaCl, LiCl, MgSO4, NaH2PO4, (NH4)2SO4, Na2SO4). The evaluated thanks classification PEs into kosmotropes (well hydrated) chaotropes (poorly following law matching water affinities (LMWA). type anions cations on multilayer formation membrane performances was evaluated. Membranes kosmotropic achieved stable after only 4 bilayers, almost 6 times higher permeabilities chaotropic without compromising often even improving membrane's size exclusion behaviour. used tuned charge: Kosmotropic delivered negatively charged Na2SO4 MgCl2 retentions till 97% 10% respectively, while formed more positively reversed behaviour rejection 20 89%.

Protein and Lactose Separation by Modified Ultrafiltration Membrane using Layer by Layer Technique

Layer-by-Layer (LbL) is a method which can be used for nanoscale coating and surface functionalization of a material. LbL technique mainly uses the electrostatic attracting between charged materials (polyelectrolytes, nanoparticles, etc.) and an oppositely charged surface. In this study, protein separation (BSA) from lactose solution was carried out using the LbL self-assembly method, which was...

Modulating Nucleation by Kosmotropes and Chaotropes: Testing the Waters

Water is a fundamental solvent sustaining life, key to the conformations and equilibria associated with solute species. Emerging studies on nucleation and crystallization phenomena reveal that the dynamics of hydration associated with mineral precursors are critical in determining material formation and growth. With certain small molecules affecting the hydration and conformational stability of...

Kosmotropes and chaotropes: modelling preferential exclusion, binding and aggregate stability.

Kosmotropic cosolvents added to an aqueous solution promote the aggregation of hydrophobic solute particles, while chaotropic cosolvents act to destabilise such aggregates. We discuss the mechanism for these phenomena within an adapted version of the two-state Muller-Lee-Graziano model for water, which provides a complete description of the ternary water/cosolvent/solute system for small solute...

Tailor-made biofunctionalized nanoparticles using layer-by-layer technology.

Layer-by-layer (LBL) technique is a well-established method for the formation of nanofilms on planar surfaces, as well as on micro-sized colloidal particles. For surface functionalization of nanoparticles, it is a very recent area of research receiving great interest due to the advantage of obtaining fine control over the shell composition, charge and thickness, offering several applications in...
